Description
Intermediate Maya Bowl with Nicoya InfluenceMaya, Southern Lowlands
C. 400-600 AD
Slipped and Painted Pottery
3" Tall x 7½" Wide
The offering vessel has a corseted wall, convex base, and painted over the interior and exterior with panels of serpent headed deities with bird beaks and pseudo-glyphs. The example shows strong Nicoya/ Guanacaste influences, possibly having been intentionally made by another culture and traded north to the Maya. A strong trade route existed between the cultures and influenced the painted pottery found in the Maya southern lowlands, this example exemplifying just how strong the connection was. The bowl form and Chac heads are typical Maya while the ornate interwoven designs and dyes are typical Nicoya. An intriguing example. The bowl has some ancient chips to the rim and a light hairline, else intact and with original paint.
