Description
Dan Namingha (American, b. 1950)Gathering
acrylic on canvas, signed lower right: Namingha, titled verso: Gathering
Provenance:
Property of a New Mexican Collector
Dimensions: 68 x 40 inches
Dan Namingha's boldly colored abstractions derive from two primary influences: the long line of artists in his Hopi-Tewa family and the modernist painters whom he studied at the University of Kansas and the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Namingha grew up on a Hopi reservation in Arizona, watching his grandmother, mother, and sister crafting pottery and his uncles carving kachinas, or spirit dolls. The stylized, abstract decorations of these native art forms shaped his later interest in certain geometric painters, particularly the Surrealist Paul Klee and the Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko. The totemic Gathering synthesizes Hopi kachinas with cubistic color fields and Klee's pictographic masks. Namingha's works are featured in collections worldwide.
