THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

    PROVENANCE:
Washburn Gallery, New York, #473 (labels verso).

A significant figure in American abstract art, Shaw enjoyed a varied career as a writer and illustrator, poet, modernist painter, and collector. Born to a wealthy family and orphaned at a young age, Charles and his twin brother were raised by their uncle, Frank D. Shaw. He was a precocious child, writing and illustrating books before he had entered his teens. He graduated from Yale in 1914 and studied painting with Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League in New York in 1927, and with George Luks as well. This wonderful montage shows Shaw's interest in Cubist collage as well as beautiful antiques, comprised as it is of 19th-century Bavarian playing cards he doubtless acquired during his compulsive antiquing forays in New York. Shaw seems to have had an innate sense of fine design, because his work is always elegantly composed, regardless of medium.
