    Description

Aztec Stone Image of a Grasshopper

    Aztec
    Ça 1300-1500 AD
    Carved from reddish stone

    4½" High x 11" Long

This fine sculpture appears to be a monument to an insect, but it is a marker in the history of the Aztecs. During their quest to find a place to settle, they arrived at a place called Chapultepec, or "grasshopper hill." The green area was full of grasshoppers, which served as a protein source as well as a metaphor for movement and the capability to live in both earth and air. The Aztecs created many sculptures of animals in stone. They did not worship animals, but used the images of these creatures to remind them of the power of nature. A similar, but larger, sculpture of a grasshopper has traveled with major Aztec exhibitions.
