A Wonderful Chucu Painted Stone Plaque

C. 1000-1500 AD
10" x 12½"

Painted in vivid mineral pigments, depicting shepherds, camelids, and irrigation canal. White dots represent rain. It is believed that these plaques were offered to the gods to ask for rain so that the animals would live. Stone Chucu plaques are much rarer that those painted on pottery shards, and this is an outstanding example, whose motif is reminiscent of Australian aboriginal art. Custom stand included.
