Description
A SIOUX QUILLED HIDE POUCHc. 1900
decorated on one side with a patriotic eagle in natural and dyed porcupine quills, and on the other with a pair of American flags against a hide ground, beadwork and short hide fringe on the perimeter
Length: 12 inches overall
Condition Report*:
In overall good condition. Hide with usual wear and moderate soiling, some heavy soiling on fringe. Quilling bright and nearly perfect on Eagle side with some loss and abrasion on American flag side. Beadwork intact. Seven of 11 small metal disks present on Eagle side, eight of nine small metal disks present on American flag side. One of two quill handles broken. Four narrow quilled tassels on sides of bag, only one ending with a red metal tipped horsehair tassel. Inside the bag there is a metal tipped horsehair tassel, a horsehair tassel without a metal sheath, and a narrow strip of quilling approx. 4-3/4". The fringe surrounding the bag has losses and appears stiff. No apparent restoration.
