Description
A SIOUX MAN'S QUILLED HIDE BREASTPLATEc. 1920
composed of two panels of cow (?) hide decorated with circular trade mirrors, and panels of rawhide slats wrapped with natural and dyed porcupine quills, trimmed with metal cones inserted with red-dyed chicken feathers, together with squirrel pelt and cow (?) vertabrae
Length: 36 inches
Condition Report*:
In overall good condition. Hide with moderate wear, including moderate soiling. One tear of approx. 1" x 1-1/2" to back near middle of one side. Back of hide has small pinholes not noticeable on front. Porcupine quills have some loss, abrasion. Red wool appears bright. Metal cones with red chicken feathers extant. Nineteen of twenty mirrored circles present on front fur, some loose and one with possible glue substance underneath. Cow (?) vertebrae appear to be in good condition. Squirrel pelt has two of three mirrored disks present. Hide is separated around right eye. One small nail hole (with nail) in front left leg.
