    A Rare 14K Gold and Agate Balloon-Flown and Diving Bell-Descended Vinaigrette, circa 1814
    1/2 h x 1 w x 7/8 d inches (1.3 x 2.5 x 2.1 cm)

    Bonhams, Fine Ballooning Art: The Property of a Gentleman, 16 December 1991, Lot. 44;
    Acquired from the above.

    Underside with engraved balloon and inscription This Box Ascended with Mr. Jno Sadler on the Jubilee Aug. 1 1814.
    Interior below vinaigrette gate with engraved diving bell and inscription This Box descended in a Diving Bell at Devonport Sepr 1821

    This box was carried on a balloon ascension from Hyde Park in London at the Jubilee Celebration which marked the passage of 100 years since the Hanoverians acceded to the throne. The well-attended celebration was a month long festival, beginning on July 15, 1814. James Sadler was a celebrated figure who was the first Englishman to fly in a balloon in 1784 around Merton College, Oxford. On August 1, 1814, Sadler's son Johnathan performed an ascension over Hyde Park, carrying souvenirs in the basket as well as dropping miniature parachutes containing jubilee messages.

    The descension inscription inside the diving bell is likely related to the construction of the wharf walls in the Devonport dockyard, in which a diving bell was used.
