Description

A NAVAJO CHIEF'S STYLE BLANKET
c. 1940

woven of native handspun wool in natural ivory and brown and aniline red, with a Third Phase Chief's pattern

Provenance:
Collected by the current owner's great uncle, Wilmer C. Roberts, who hailed from Easton, MD, but headed west in 1908 at the age of 20, becoming a land surveyor in present day New Mexico and Arizona. He eventually met his wife, Alma Swayne, at a downtown Saturday night dance in Albuquerque, NM. The two settled in Jeddito, AZ and built a trading post which they ran for 45 years. Roberts loved the Navajo people, was fluent in their language and organized a dance band in which he played drums, his wife, the piano, and Navajo friends, the horns.

Dimensions: 54 x 55 ½ inches
