Description
A NAVAJO CHIEF'S STYLE BLANKETc. 1940
woven of native handspun wool in natural ivory and brown and aniline red, with a Third Phase Chief's pattern
Provenance:
Collected by the current owner's great uncle, Wilmer C. Roberts, who hailed from Easton, MD, but headed west in 1908 at the age of 20, becoming a land surveyor in present day New Mexico and Arizona. He eventually met his wife, Alma Swayne, at a downtown Saturday night dance in Albuquerque, NM. The two settled in Jeddito, AZ and built a trading post which they ran for 45 years. Roberts loved the Navajo people, was fluent in their language and organized a dance band in which he played drums, his wife, the piano, and Navajo friends, the horns.
Dimensions: 54 x 55 ½ inches
Condition Report*:
In overall good condition. No holes. A couple of exposed warp threads. One side faded along one end. No bleeding. No stains. Selvedge and corner ties intact. No apparent restoration.
