Description

A Massive Toguna Architectural Support Post, Dogon People, Mali

Architectural elements like these were carved in very heavy, hard wood sometimes known as iron wood. They were intended to stand for generations, and in the dry climate of Mali some remained in use for centuries. Most are simple forms, but a few, like this exceptional example, were abandoned with figural carving, in this case, a full human figure. The erosion at the bottom where the post rested in the soil attests to age of use.
