    A Group of WWII and Related Aviator Items, circa 1940 and later
    24-3/8 inches high x 11-3/4 inches wide (61.9 x 29.8 cm) (life vest, flat)

    Property from the Estate of Charles Schalebaum

    Lot comprising:
    WWII-period US leather pilot helmet;
    WWII-period US "Mae West" pilot's life vest, signed by John Wayne;
    WWII or earlier leather and chain mail pilot's face guard;
    Pilot's notebook on F-51D maneuvers;
    F-51D/T6 aircraft manual;
    Silver-plated pocket watch cover;
    Diminutive propellor;
    Felt Pike's Peak pennant.

    Note: The life vest is signed to the leather frontspiece by John Wayne, and is thought to be a prop from the Flying Leathernecks (1951) feature film.


    Condition Report*: Age-related wear to plastic and leather, minor areas of dry rot, some wear to straps,  missing elements to lifevest, T6 manual appearst to be missing several pages, wear to notebooks, errant soiling, with wear commensurate with age and use.
