    A Cased W. Watson & Sons Compound Monocular Metallurgical Microscope, circa 1928
    12 inches high (30.5 cm) (base)

    PRIVATE WEST COAST COLLECTION

    Base engraved "W. Watson & Sons, Ltd 313 High Holborn London" "No. 2 Metl."; "42705" on rear foot. Brass and heavy black enamal. Base stand is an Edinburgh Stand H. Vertically mounted fine focus, milled head engraved "0 - 9 1 Divn. = .01 mm". 2" dia. Body tube with uncalibrated draw tube. Watson's standard mechanical stage [see Watson 1928 33rd Ed. Catalog [1706], p.60] on an adjustable rack, fitted with glass plate over a 2" dia threaded opening. No sub-stage or condenser. A Watson-Conrady Condenser Vertical Illuminator is fitted to the nose piece. A Watson illuminator with lamp and iris diaphragm, not present, may be threaded into the reflector box or any external source may be focused into the box. Ibid, p. 120. Objectives: "1/8" PARA for Metallurgy 80 n.a. Tube Length 200 mm WW 10021", in black brass can, signed: "PARACHROMATIC 1/8 INCH W. WATSON & SONS Ltd LONDON", some distress to the lacquer; "PARA 2 in WW", in a black brass can signed: "PARA 2 in WW", excellent condition; "2 in. Watson's Argus", in unsigned black brass can, lacquer is distressed. The 2" PARA has an NA of 0.15 and the less expensive Argus, NA= 0.11 [ibid, pp. 16-17]. Oculars: "2 X6" and "4 X10", both signed, "WW"; right-angle ocular insert. Stage micrometer, "WATSON BARNET 1 MM in 1, .01 MM", scratched, later addition. Fitted mahogany case with key. Magnifying Chart in door dated 17-Oct-1928 and signed with SN 42705.


    Condition Report*: Some areas of scratching and areas of use, wear to leather handle to case, some ink writing to label to interior door, fitting to interior loose, with wear commensurate with age and use.
