    The medal, designed by Nicolas-Marie Gatteaux, commemorates the ascension of the Le Flesselles balloon at Lyon by the Montgolfier brothers, Jean-François Pilatre de Rozier, and several other French nobles on January 19, 1784. The ascent was witnessed by over 100,000 people and reached a maximum height of 3,000 feet.
