Reynolds's portrait of Henry Bowles Howard communicates the mastery of the artist, invoking classical values with strong lighting, rich colors, and free handling of the paint. As first president of the Royal Academy in London, his earned commissions would raise the status of an artist in Britain during the Romantic period, influencing artists such as Thomas Lawrence and Henry Raeburn.
