    Papua-New Guinea, Gulf of Papua
    Kerewa (titihebia)
    Spirit Board
    Wood, pigment
Height: 49 inches Width: 8 inches

Among the Kerewa of the Kikori River delta region of the Gulf of Papua, three types of ancestral tablets or spirit boards, generically gope, are found. The more frequently seen types are the personal boards of adults, of which this is an example, and the small boards which are property of uninitiated adolescents and help in the boys' growth toward adulthood. A board such as this one probably represented a named ancestor and was stored at the entrance to the clan area in the communal men's house. In style of eye treatment and proportion of figure to head area, this example is related to several published examples collected between 1900 and 1915. The overall condition is very good. There are a few small puncture holes and on the back between 13 and 14 inches from the top at the proper left edge is a charred area slightly more than a square inch in area.

Provenance: Eduardo Munt, Potts Point, NSW, Australia
Collected ca. 1971 on Goaribari Island
