Description

Oceanic, Papua-New Guinea, Eastern Highlands, Central Area,
Maring (?) or Wahgi River area
War Shield
Wood, pigment, basketry, vines, metal wire, nails
Height: 65 inches Width: 22 ΒΌ inches

The Maring are closely related culturally and linguistically to the Wahgi people, so that their shields are similar to those found in the Wahgi River valley. This shield, in fact, exhibits design components and techniques from both areas, the row of bold dots at bottom being a Maring characteristic along with the more elaborate overall design, while the plain circular center motif is more frequent in the Wahgi area. Cherry Lowman has noted that the Maring warriors intended for the bold patterns and bright colors of their shield designs to have a frightening effect on foes even when seen at some distance.
Some areas where the wood was splitting have indigenous repairs. There are use scars and stains.

Provenance:
Martin, Port Moresby, Papua-New Guinea
Clarke and Clarke, Scottsdale
Gary Hendershott, Little Rock
