Description
Woolly Mammoth TuskMammuthus primigenius
Pleistocene
Alaska, USA
This truly massive Alaskan Mammoth Tusk is superlative for many reasons. Obviously, the extreme size makes this world class with the giant Ice Age fossil measuring over 11.75 feet (3.5 meters) on the outer curve. The extreme winding curvature - with its uncommon "double curve" - is diagnostic of Mammoth Tusks but rarely so pronounced. Of course, the intense greenish-blue coloration really elevates the piece to the highest level as the mineral Vivianite has naturally "stained" the tusk over much of its smooth and polished surface. The quality of the elongated modified tooth is also apparent as the huge tusk exhibits a minimal amount of restoration, although some minor, and typical, cracking has been filled. Presented on a functional custom wooden display cradle, this spectacular specimen rests in a horizontal orientation to maximize the visual impact of its size and curvature. This is a top piece for size, shape, quality, and color. The big tusk does exhibit some minor recent linear cracking which has been expertly filled and repaired.
Overall Measurements: 64 x 41 x 54 inches (162.56 x 104.14 x 137.16 cm)
