Gyaiungu, Braldu Valley, Skardu Dist., Baltistan. Gilgit-Baltistan (Northern Areas), Pakistan

Topaz is a gemstone that suffers from a vague and ambiguous history. The Old Testament, in Exodus 28:17 mentions "a topaz" but other references of the period place Topaz as originating on "Topázion"; the Greek name for an island in the Red Sea, now known as St. John's Island. Unfortunately, the only gemstone ever found on that island has been Peridot, the birthstone for August. The 'real' Topaz comes in a variety of colors, unlike Peridot, and from a large number of places on the planet, Pakistan being one of the ones producing good specimens of Topaz. This, larger than most, combination example features a highly transparent blocky prism of a light "sherry" hue with white, bladed Cleavelandite and golden mica crystals hugging the base of the Topaz. The termination is a simple flat one that exhibits numerous, tiny "growth hillocks" along with some minor nicking of edges. The backside of the massive prism has an indentation where another Topaz crystal separated from this one before crystal growth stopped. This fine specimen was mined in 1994.
