The Tissint shergottite is a meteorite from Mars and only the fifth witnessed Martian meteorite falling to Earth - and the first in over 50 years. This fall in 2011 increased the total amount of Martian material on Earth, which is estimated at only about 220 pounds (100 kilograms). Tissint is prized by top collectors as its value for even a small amount can be considerable. Relative to all meteorites, Martian examples are a rarity with only just over 200 being identified. This small sample weighing only 3.18 grams is very serious for Tissint and was actually self-collected by the owner on a meteorite hunting expedition. The tiny black morsel features a complex, lustrous and highly aesthetic surface in contrast to a lightly colored, granular interior, which is revealed on the underside of this little representation of the iconic Martian shergottite.
