THE HILL TWIN EMERALD - LONGEST NORTH AMERICAN EMERALD CRYSTAL
North America Emerald Mines (formerly the Rist Mine), Hiddenite, Alexander Co., North Carolina, USA
That Emerald crystals could be found in the vicinity of Hiddenite, North Carolina, is well documented with discoveries going back to the 1800's. Such a possibility induced a local man to try his hand at Emerald mining. That man, James K. Hill Jr., has indicated that intuition played a major part in his decision to commence digging at a particular spot on his family's property in North Carolina in 1998. Twelve feet below the starting point of his new dig, he struck a cavity or "pocket," as they are called. Inside that pocket he found a pirate's treasure of Emerald crystals: some 3,300 carats of them to be exact. In the years since then, several other pockets were opened after Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) indicated further potentially interesting targets. On August 23, 2006, one of those targets produced this specimen; the current record holder for longest North American Emerald known at 9½ inches! Due to a second Emerald crystal being attached to one side, it was christened "The Hill Twin Emerald." For a period it was held in the collection of NAEM (North American Emerald Mines), Mr. Hill's company, before entering the collection of Richard Geiger. In appearance, it is considerably longer than other Emeralds from this area, but other than that, it is quite representative of the North Carolina material. The coloration varies from almost colorless near the base and back, through a light "Emerald Green" over most of its length, darkening to a vibrant, gemmy green at the termination. The secondary crystal growing out from the side measures a significant 7¼ inches in length: very impressive in its own right. The secondary crystal also possesses a deeper color termination, albeit of smaller size. The basal section appears to be partially hollow for a short distance, which is in accord with the partial re-solution seen on that end. Supposedly found in three pieces in the pocket, whatever restorations have been done to it are quite invisible to the trained eye. Luster varies from muted at the base to glassy at the termination. The condition is excellent with the exception of the alleged restoration. Overall dimensions are 9½ inches long by 1 1/8 inches at widest point by ½ inch wide at termination. This significant specimen, worthy of any museum collection, weighs a hefty 591 carats and comes with a custom base.
