    Description

    T-rex Dinosaur Tooth
    Tyrannosaurus rex
    Late Cretaceous
    Hell Creek Formation
    Buffalo, South Dakota, USA

An extremely rare phenomenon, this most unusual specimen is a GERM tooth and from a T-rex no less! This example of Late Cretaceous dentition represents a thin, hollow, rootless crown replacement tooth that grows by adding layers of dentine. Such teeth are different from the much more typical shed teeth and so uncommon that a top commercial paleontologist with decades of experience has only ever seen four such examples (including this one), of which two were found together. Due to fragility, such GERM teeth are almost always found with or in the skull - but not this one. The singular specimen was likely the result of a battle resulting in loss of a tooth for the animal. This type of tooth tells a real story.

This tooth was never fully erupted and exhibits a dark black coloration. Some normal crushing is evident and to be expected due to the hollow nature and variance from other varieties like shed teeth. This shed maxillary tooth is similar to a "baby" tooth but much larger. This fossil is in relatively exceptional quality, and the piece features superb preservation of both the enamel and the serrations. Minor tip restoration was performed, and that work is consistent with a GERM tooth since the tips often break on the hollow dentition when pressed against anything to come out of the jaw. This is essentially a complete example.

The extreme rarity of this type of specimen cannot be overstated, and the fossil is in excellent condition. An offering such as this is not likely to be see again anytime soon, and a GERM tooth like this one should be of incredible appeal to anyone who collects Dinosaur teeth, T-rex material or any real paleontological anomalies. This is about as 'one-of-a-kind' as it gets when it comes to any fossilized teeth and Dinosaurs. This tooth measures a sizable 2.56 inches (6.5 cm) and has a wonderful patina as well as finer serrations.
    Overall Measurements: 2.56 x 1.37 x 0.71 inches (6.50 x 3.48 x 1.80 cm)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
