    Description

    Superb Ammonite
    Cleoniceras cleon
    Cretaceous
    Madagascar

In terms of strict rules of science, there are two diagnostic characteristics which distinguish the highly important subclass of Ammonites from all other cephalopods: complex suture lines and marginal placement of the siphuncle. This may not sound terribly germane with respect to some catalog description of a fossil specimen, but this particular Ammonite happens to exhibit both of these characteristics in textbook detail. This example measures an impressive 11 inches (27.9 cm) and is phenomenal on both sides. It displays an amazingly artistic suture pattern: representing the septa, or divisions, in the shell chambers. It also has a clearly visible siphuncle preserved on the outer rim of its shell. The siphuncle is a "tube-like" structure through which air and gases were siphoned to help the creatures regulate buoyancy. This is an exceptional specimen which is complete from the inner whorl to the outer chambers. Golden brown over most of the polished surface, the Ammonite is beautifully decorative.
    Overall Measurements: 11 x 9.25 x 2 inches (27.9 x 23.5 x 5.2 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
