STUNNING AMMONITE ON MATRIX FROM THE FAMOUS SCUNTHORPE IRONSTONES
    Eparitites sp.
    Jurassic
    Frodingham Ironstone Formation
    Scunthorpe, England

The Scunthorpe Ironstones have long been a classic locality for beautiful Ammonites. Unfortunately, this locality is winding down such that the wonderful fossils are no longer being produced from this area. The spectacular specimen here is Eparitites sp. which has a smooth shell surface and demonstrates phenomenal suture patterning on its rich cream and white fossilized interior. Sitting atop a fossiliferous matrix, this piece exhibits the classic characteristics so valued by collectors of Scunthorpe material. Ammonites, members of a specific class of predatory marine invertebrates, are distinguished by very complex sutures lines and marginal placement of the siphuncle, an organelle likely used to regulate buoyancy. The Ammonite alone measures 8.5 x 7.75 x 1.5 inches (21.59 x 19.69 x 3.81 cm). This is a both a collector specimen and a display piece.
    Overall fossil measurements 14.5 x 14 x 3.5 inches (36.83 x 35.56 x 8.89 cm) and is on a custom acrylic base 11 x 2 x 5.5 inches (27.94 x 5.08 x 13.97 cm).
