Wuning Mine (Wuling Mine; Qingjiang Mine)
    Qingjiang, Wuning Co., Jiujiang

The explosive economic growth in China resulted in a commensurate expansion in mineral exploration and mining. Demand for Antimony for industry led to various deposits being exploited, many of which had open caverns and fissures where "swords" of Stibnite emerged from the mines walls. Fortunately, the miners at Wuning knew to preserve the specimen examples they encountered, respecting that those were worth much more than their inherent value as simple ore. Comprised of 15 or so primary crystals and a whole host of smaller ones, radiating from a common point, this world-class mineral represents the finest in metallic luster over its terminated crystals. Minor damage, neither terribly noticeable nor significant, is expected, given the nature of the formation, and the mass of crystals on this interwoven form. Presented on a custom engraved acrylic base, the example from the seminal 2003 Jiangxi pocket offers incredible dimensionality and is a classic considered one of the best in the world for its size and shape. A truly iconic specimen, this mineral was originally sold by Daniel Trinchillo who controlled and marketed the find with the piece initially going to collector Keith Proctor then ending up in the Hoppel Collection where it was acquired by Robie Vaughn. The majestic "spray" of striated, elongated crystals represents a consummate collector specimen with a rare combination of quality, condition, size, luster and balance. There is a reason this has passed through the eminent hands it has and is fortunately now available for acquisition again. This is simply a spectacular example of the iconic Chinese mineral from a classic locality for the type which is still considered to be the best pocket for the species ever discovered for collector grade material. This piece was selected to be the Cover Lot for this catalog for its eminence.
