    Description

    SPHALERITE
ZCA Pierrepont Mine, Pierrepont, St. Lawrence Co., New York, USA

Sphalerite is one of THE most common ore minerals imaginable. It seems that every Lead/Zinc/Silver mine in Creation has some. Most is massive in form, black in color, and very low in attractiveness. At the other end of the Sphalerite spectrum are specimens like this one: well-crystallized, lustrous, transparent, light honey-gold in color and last - on matrix! This very fine specimen is from the ZCA Mines in Pierrepont, New York. These mines are one of the few places in the world noted for unusual transparent crystals both light enough in color and 'clean' enough to facet. The main crystal is 1.5 inches (3.78 cm) across, and it is possible to see from one side of this honey-colored gem to the other. There is an abundance of interesting growth features on some of the crystal faces, all of which display almost metallic luster. This is a world class Sphalerite in pristine condition. You owe it to yourself to see this rock in person - it's that good! It comes with a custom acrylic stand.
    Overall Measurements: 2.14 x 1.74 x 1.66 inches (5.44 x 4.43 x 4.24 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: Williams Minerals [Hoppel #D0905]
