Mount Brockman Station, Pilbara, Western Australia

Found only in Western Australia, the incomparable Marra Mamba Tiger's Eye and Tiger Iron were formed by processes that began, unbelievably, over two and a half billion years ago! Volcanic iron mixed with oxygen to form "banded iron formations" of iron rich and silica rich bands. Geological processes then resulted in the crystallization of layers which caused Riebeckite to be formed. Earth movements caused distortion of layers, and Riebeckite crystals were replaced by silica resulting in the formation of Tiger's Eye with a fine dusting of yellow Goethite outlining the original crystal shape. Continued mineral replacement resulted in the myriad of colors which make Tiger's Eye so treasured with the white Quartz, yellow Goethite, red/black Hematite, blue Riebeckite ("Crocidolite") and various combinations of these minerals resulting in the brilliant golden yellow, deep red and rich green colors so characteristic of the Marra Mamba material. This specimen is truly outstanding on many levels. The shape is quite unique, and the colorful banding is truncated at the bottom and angled at the top making for an amazing vertical presentation of this piece as a wall hanging. The alternating bands of dark green, golden yellow and muted red result in an explosion of color to the visual senses. The piece is reinforced with metal on the back and shows great asymmetry. 29.5 x 14 x 1.75 inches (74.93 x 35.56 x 4.45 cm)
