    Description

    SPECTACULAR "GEM" AMMONITE IN MATRIX
    Placenticeras meeki
    Late Cretaceous
    Bearpaw Formation
    Alberta, Canada

Spectacular "gem" ammonites are highly prized in museums and collections around the world. This incredible specimen dates back 70 million years ago and is exactly why these are considered a Canadian national treasure - from the premier fossil locality for gem ammonites. This locality is the only place on earth that produces ammonites with unbelievable bright, beautiful and iridescent colors. In fact, the preservation is so good that the World Jewelry Confederation gave the fossilized shell material, known as Ammolite, gemstone status in 1981, the same year commercial mining of Ammolite began. The color is primarily a function of the fossil preservation of the shell nacre, and significant deposits of gem-quality Ammolite are only found in the famous Bearpaw Formation in southern Alberta, Canada. This specimen is truly outsatnding and without question is a museum-quality piece. The colors are unparalleled in this specimen with an uncommon large band of purple around the outer part of the fossilized shell transitioning to blue then culimating in a broad band of green near the center then even a gold. This piece is unusal for such an array of colors appearing so prominently, and this specimen rivals any even at a smaller size than some of the big decorators. Matrix - 21 x 16.5 inches (53.34 x 41.91 cm). Fossil - 14 x 12 inches (35.56 x 30.48 cm).
