    Artist: Luis Alberto Quispe
Stone Source: Tanzania, Russia & Brazil

The "Frog Prince" was the inspiration for this extremely unique chess set. The kings and queens are accompanied by their court, all of whom are playing musical instruments. The detailing of each individual chess piece is exquisite and they are all different: a delight to behold! All of the thirty-two frogs are fabricated from Tanzanian Ruby - an extremely hard and difficult mineral to carve. Almost all of the frogs are sitting on "magical" toadstools but a few are actually riding snails! Their bases are either carved out of Russian black Obsidian or polished Brazilian rock crystal. Each of their eyes are set with Ruby cabochons rimmed with 18K gold. Their cloaks, crowns, scepters and musical instruments have been forged out of gold vermeil. The high carat gold finish adds a great contrast to the rich Ruby red color of the frogs themselves - the chess set is steeped with pageantry and action. The board is custom made out of Obsidian, Quartz, and hardwoods and lights up. It is housed in a custom-fitted decorative mahogany case with brass fittings.
For the chess aficionado, the chess game on the opposite page displays a recreation of the game between Tal and Vladamir Simagin, four years before Tal defeated Mikhail Botvinnik to become world champion. Mikhail Tal was a Soviet-Latvian chess Grandmaster and the eighth World Chess Champion(1960 - 1961). Also know as the "Magician from Riga" and widely considered to the best attacking player of all time, he played in a daring, combinatorial style. We thought that recreating that game, using a fine chess set worthy of a Grandmaster, was only fitting.
Measurements: Chess pieces range in size from 3.25 x 2 inches (8.26 x 5 cm) for the Pawns to 5.5 x 2.25 inches (14 x 5.7 cm) for the Kings. The Chess board itself is 23.63 inches (60 cm) square with the playing area measuring 19 inches (48.26 cm) square. The custom Chess case is 26.25 inches (66.68 cm) square and 10.75 inches (27.31 cm) deep.
    Offered at no reserve.
