    Pyritized Ichthyosaur Vertebrae
    Ichthyosaurus sp.
    Lower Cretaceous
    Volga River
    Ulyanovsk Region, Russia

The Volga River area of Russia is known for producing exceptional fossils, often with the added bonus of pyritization resulting in a type of metallic preservation. That is precisely the case with these vertebrae of an Ichthyosaurus that lived during the Lower Cretaceous. The example consists of a shallow single "vert" that has been cut and polished to reveal the inner pyritized composition while still retaining the external features of the aquatic reptilian centrum that has been divided for presentation purposes. The deep and broad 'scoop' is characteristic of marine vertebrates, and, while not Dinosaurs, Ichthyosaurs lived during the same time as the "terrible lizards" that dominated the Paleozoic. This is a unique type of fossil.
