    Description

    Pyrite
Dongchuan Cu ore field, Dongchuan District
    Kunming, Yunnan
    China

This rather unusual concretion clearly resembles a "spaceship" and consists of hardened sediment, with a sprinkling of Pyrite that encircles the extreme natural shape. This variety of concretion forms inside of sediments prior to hardening into rocks when still soft as the material starts to compact and loses water. Often beginning by nucleating around a fossil or a fragment of some organic material, black shale forms indicative of conditions of little or no oxygen but abundant Sulfur. Iron in the system would be drawn to the Sulfur and form Pyrite in concentric layers resulting in round, or elliptical, concretions of black shale. Such formations are few and far between with this representation being one of the biggest and best and was likely mined about five years ago. Presented on a custom engraved acrylic base, this monstrous and surreal specimen is sure to be a conversation starter in any display case or collection where it is housed.
    Measurements: 11.02 x 10.63 x 4.72 inches (28.00 x 27.00 x 12.00 cm)
