Description
PYRITEAmpliación a Victoria Mine, Navajún, La Rioja, Spain
A small open pit in the Rioja Province of Spain is the source of this homage to geometric purity. The simplicity and perfection of Navajún Pyrites is such that many people on first introduction assume that they are machined. They believe that nothing looking like these cubic wonders could be natural and not manmade. Be that as it may, this geometric confection is quite natural and other than being larger and more perfect than most of the pyrite from there, it is the epitome of such things. The brilliantly brassy forms are perched on a matrix of the host marl native to the mine. Depending on how you look at it, there are either two or five cubic crystals up to 3.13 inches (8 cm) across protruding from the off-white matrix. The reason for this ambiguity is that one of the crystals seems to be twinned and shows four cubic areas with slightly different orientations. The individual faces show numerous growth hillocks: another proof that they are not machined. In any case, the specimen is both large and striking enough to fascinate adults and children alike. Luster is the brilliantly reflective one normal for these treasures and the condition is most excellent. It has a custom acrylic base.
Overall measurements: 8 x 7 x 4 inches (20.3 x 17.8 x 10.2 cm).
Provenance: Minerals America [Hoppel # D1933]
