In some cases, fossils can be quite decorative, especially when they are cut or polished or otherwise turned into some form of artwork. The Sahara Desert of Morocco, once amazingly the bottom of the ancient ocean, has provided large quantities of fossilized stone that has been crafted by locals into decorator display specimens. This piece - the Orthoceras "bat" - has been polished in relief to stand out from its "stippled" marbleized matrix. The straight-shelled nautiloid fossil features chambers which have been replaced with minerals, preserving the shell pattern of this exceptionally large cephalopod. While Orthoceras are common, they are rarely this big!
