    Description

    Gold & Galena

    Native Gold, Galena & Quartz
St Helena Mine, Welkom, Lejweleputswa District, Free State, South Africa

"A loosely intergrown cluster of crystallized gold leaves about 2.5 inches across, associated with galena and some white massive quartz shards. I think this may be one of the best gold specimens ever found in South Africa which is well known for its rich gold mines. All the gold is in the reefs and pockets of freestanding gold is(sic) extremely rare. Bought the specimen from the Rocksmiths who got it from David Harrison of Huston [sic] who used to be [sic, know] a geologist at the mine"
    - Rock H. Currier

As Rock correctly notes, South Africa is a major Gold producer. Unfortunately, almost all of the Gold found there is from ancient alluvial channels and water-worn. This specimen, one of the very few, was found in situ. An article on this mine would be of great interest to the collecting world in general and Gold collectors in particular. The contrast between: bright Gold leaves, dark shiny metallic Galena, and white Quartz accents, is both startling and stunning. There is a custom labeled base for this one-of-a-kind specimen.
    Overall Measurements: 2.6 x 2.0 x 1.6 inches (6.5 x 5.0 x 4.0 cm)

Provenance: Bought from the Rocksmiths, Ex. David Harrison Collection [RHC #6959, acquired 1987]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
