Eagle's Nest Mine (Mystery Wind Mine), Placer Co., California, USA
Crystalline Gold specimens have always represented a very small percentage of the World supply of this, much sought after, fought over, metal. Based upon collector preferences, certain criteria define the ideal Gold specimen. Some of the more important ones are: a) The presence of large, well-defined, undamaged crystals; b) Specula rather than matte luster; c) High percentage of actual Gold for richness of color; d) Presence of host rock matrix; e) Aesthetic arrangement of crystals; f) Freedom from "enhancements" or exotic treatments, i.e. acid etching of host rock; and finally g) Overall size of specimen. With due consideration to the above criteria, close inspection of this reticulated mass of Native Gold leads to a fairly obvious conclusion: this is an exceptional specimen of the metal that any museum would be proud to display side by side with equally exceptional historic jewels. The form seems to grow as it rises from a white Quartz matrix, with splashes of burnt sienna surrounding spots of included Gold. The luster and color are as good as it gets for this metal, showing rich, buttery reflections from a multitude of shining faces. There is no damage to mar the beauty of this carefully conserved wonder. The overall dimensions of the piece are 7½ inches high by 2 inches wide by 1 inch thick. A stunning addition to any serious collection. It has a custom labeled acrylic base.
Provenance: Lyda Hill Collection, Dallas, Texas
