    Description

    Mastodon Jaw Section with Teeth
    Mammut americanum
    Pliocene
    Golliad Formation
    Nueces River, Nueces County, TX

This partial Mastodon skull, or, more precisely the upper jaw section - known as the maxilla- was found in a gravel pit outside of Corpus Christi, Texas many years ago. This massive maxilla still contains all four of the adult teeth of the ancient proboscidean. Given the limited wear on the very well-preserved teeth, the animal likely died relatively young. This huge fossil remnant dates to the Pliocene Epoch so is about 5 million years old. The teeth are large and attractive with a rich white sheen to the preserved enamel. Two of the four are in very good condition, with the other two exhibiting more wear incurred when this creature was alive. The solid bony structure holding the teeth in place is huge with three-dimensionality due to its complex growth. There is some minor restoration which stabilized the jaw section and secured the teeth in place. Each of the large Mastodon teeth would be fine specimens individually, but the set of four in such a huge portion of the maxilla results in a truly magnificent associated fossil. The showy piece has the incredible and unusual combination of aesthetic appeal and significant size. Without a doubt this is simply an amazing fossil.
