Manhattan Project GlassManhattan Project Hanford Site
Southeastern Washington, USA
A true example of American scientific history, Manhattan Project Glass like this piece from the Hanford Plutonium Reactor is rare, unique and collectible. Chosen for its location away from any big population center, the site in Washington was a critical part of the program that resulted in the creation of Atomic Bomb technology. Such glass, which is not radioactive - although does exhibit the bright golden-yellow coloration which makes it look like it should be - contains a high percentage, some 70 percent, of Lead Oxide to insulate and protect the employees at the facility from exposure to radiation. One such worker was Sam Bates who worked at the Hanford location from 1946 to 1978 and is the origin of the excellent provenance of this piece which is being offered by his family. In fact, the "glazer" who performed many duties and had access to virtually every area of the facility, cut and beveled this exquisite specimen with his own two hands. Weighing some 11 pounds (5 kilograms), this beautiful geometric form offers artistic shape and intense color. The golden-yellow "blocky" piece displays incredible hue and clarity. Sam Bates had over 300 documented radiation exposures during his tenure at Hanford, and this rare specimen was literally used as a doorstop until a grandson realized its importance and value! Rarely seen, especially in any considerable sized examples or of such quality, Manhattan Project Glass of this caliber is one special item. Several minor scratches are visible on the glassy surfaces of this now seasoned piece of Americana that deserves to be preserved and appreciated for what it represents, as well as its own amazing history. This singular object, and the only item of Science rather than Natural History in this catalog, is priceless, in terms of significance, and something to be coveted and sought after, due to the inherent scarcity.
