    Description

    INCREDIBLE "GEM" AMMONITE
    Placenticeras meeki
    Late Cretaceous, Bearpaw Formation
    St. Mary's River, Alberta, Canada

Considered to be Canadian National Treasures, the gem Ammonites of the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada, are prized by collectors throughout the world for their indescribable array of colors. These extinct molluscs most closely resemble the contemporary chambered Nautilus, and it is the fossilized shell material - known as Ammolite - with its rainbow iridescence, that has caused this shell material to be considered a bona fide gemstone. The color is a function of the structure and preservation of the shell nacre - with the colors being created in the same way that colors are created in Opal gemstones. Significant deposits of gem-quality Ammolite are only found in the Bearpaw Formation of Alberta making this material even more precious. This particular specimen of Placenticeras meeki is truly incredible because it shows the full range of colors Ammolite is capable of, unlike most others. This is a superlative specimen. The piece is relatively thin and light for its size which makes it a bit more portable. The front side is literally ablaze with reds, oranges, greens, blues and purples. The reverse side is predominantly green and purple and is quite spectacular on its own. This specimen is a top piece for color and comes with a custom metal stand as well as a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
    Overall Measurements: 18 x 17 x 2 inches (45.72 x 43.18 x 5.08 cm)
