    Artigas, Artigas Department, Uruguay
It isn't often that one is able to use the term "humongous" in a description but in this case it really is applicable: this is a truly humongous pair of Amethyst geodes, gigantic in size and scale. At a towering 6 ½ feet tall, they are mirror images of each other with distinct differences: one side has a large cream colored Calcite cluster while the other has a large Amethyst stalactite knob. The intense purple-black coloration belies its Uruguayan origin, source of the finest Amethyst in the world. Both halves have excellent color with bright crystal faces. The geode is remarkable because it was extracted intact, as shown by the natural basalt exteriors, and was perfectly split in half. The banded Agate edge has been skillfully hand polished to a high shine. The euhedral cream colored Calcite crystals have a matte finish and measure 9 x 6 ¼ inches. The deep purple Amethyst stalactite measures 6 x 6 ½ x 4 inches. Overall measurements are 78 x 34 x 16 inches and 78 ½ x 34 x 14 inches respectively and in exceptionally fine condition.
This lot is being sold as a matched pair, however, if this lot does not meet its reserve then each half will be offered separately in the 2 following lots.
