Gemstone: "Paraíba-Type" Tourmaline - 100.59 Cts.
A rough crystal discovered in the Mavuco area of Mozambique in 2001 was, surprisingly, found to be a Copper-bearing Tourmaline with an exquisite greenish-blue coloration so "mesmerizing" that the mine owners decided against heating the specimen. The 262 carat rough crystal was eventually faceted into a 100.59 carat gemstone of truly epic proportions. Unlike some 98% of all Copper-bearing Tourmaline, the color of this stone - named the "Flawless Jena Blue" - is completely natural, making the massive gem among the rarest of the rare. Simply put, this 100+ carat Tourmaline represents what is believed to be the largest, flawless, unheated Paraíba-Type in the world! In 2018, the gemstone was finally sent to the GIA for certification where it returned to this collector with a Notable Letter attesting to the uniqueness, singularity and extraordinary nature of the stone. The letter highlighted the pleasing greenish-blue color, the skill required by the cutter to fashion such a well-proportioned oval to maximize color and brilliance, the high clarity and the large size - all of which combine to make the "Jena Blue" a rare and notable gem by all counts. This superlative gemstone could have been heated to intensify its color, but the purity and uncompromising standards of the new owner precluded that from occurring. In order for the owners of the mine to allow the stone to leave the country, they did insist that it be cut in Mozambique, which is the reason the gem exhibits a native cut that was skillfully applied to showcase the natural color of the stone in the most dramatic way possible. One look at the "Jena Blue" confirms why this represents the paramount achievement of this collecting effort. The "Jena Blue" has made its way to the Smithsonian Institution where noted gemstone experts have confirmed the exquisite characteristics of "Jena Blue." The singular gemstone comes presented in a custom wood box with an engraved gold plate along with GIA Report #5191452486 and the Notable Letter. "Jena Blue" is indeed one visually mesmerizing stone.
