Sweetwater Mine, Ellington, Viburnum Trend Dist., Reynolds Co., Missouri, USA

While Galena has been a significant source of the world's Lead supply, significant and undamaged examples of this vital mineral have always been much rarer than one would think. Besides being heavy (about 7 ½ times an equivalent volume of water) it is also has a perfect cleavage that is easily demonstrated with a hammer, a rock drill or a falling chunk of rock. This matrix specimen, mined in 1973, features a sharp and lustrous group of cubic Galena crystals, on gray Dolomitic breccia fragments, which are lightly dusted with minute iridescent Chalcopyrite crystals. There are several other minor Galena cubes on the back and a couple of small Calcite crystals, but the main Galena is clearly the focus of the piece. The main Galena measures a hefty five inches (12.6 cm) by 4.25 inches (1.1 cm) by 2.875 inches (7.5 cm) and is in excellent condition with great metallic luster.
    Overall measurements: 8 x 8 x 5 inches (20.3 x 20.3 x 12.7 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Williams Minerals, ex. G. R. Hansen with notation that J. Bradbury collected it in 1973 [Hoppel Catalog # D0659]

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
