    Description

    Fulgurite
    Sahara Desert
    Egypt

Named from the Latin fulgur, meaning lightning, fulgurites are the result of an extraordinary phenomenon that allows us to grasp a lightning bolt in our hands; they are a natural glass created when lightning strikes and melts the earth. The explosion we know as thunder is created by the superheating of the air surrounding a lightning bolt to 50,000 degrees, three times the surface temperature of the sun - but it's the infinitely rarer phenomenon of fulgurite that is lightning's lasting legacy.

The present specimen is an uncommonly long tubular example measuring 19 inches in length. Although such Fulgurites often extend many feet into the earth, they invariably break into shorter pieces as a result of either the pressure of the surrounding sand on the glass while solidifying, the natural contraction of the glass while cooling, the force exerted by shifting sands, or by the simple act of unearthing them. This fine example features a ridged exterior with a lustrous silvery interior. The overall example is quite impressive and displays nicely on a custom metal armature. This natural phenomenon showcases as a piece of a modern art.
    Overall Measurements: 16.14 x 3.15 x 5.91 inches (41.00 x 8.00 x 15.00 cm)

Provenance: The Property from an East Coast Collection
Phillips, New York, June 8, 1996 (lot 237)
