    Fossil Steppe Bison Skull
    Bison priscus
    Alaska, USA

This dark skull from the Pleistocene features broad horn "cores" and a hard partial skull cavity. This bold remnant from the "Ice Age" represents a fossil Steppe Bison, a particular variety of ancient buffalo. This type of fossil resembled modern bison and became extinct in the early Holocene Epoch. Presented on a metal pin stand, this specimen displays with great western flair akin to a Georgia O'Keeffe painting. The fossil is solid, featuring an oily texture with lots of tonal contrast. One horn core is weathered, revealing the internal structure, much more than the other, which has retained more of the layered "skin" overcoat. The broad expanse of the horn-to-horn is impressive and magnificent, and this fossil is ready to be hung.
