    Description

    Fossil Dog Skull
    Mesocyon sp.
    Oligocene
    White River Badlands
    Shannon County, South Dakota, USA

This fossil skull might look oddly familiar, which should not really be surprising, since this represents a fossil dog. Mesocyon lived in the Badlands of North America some 30 million years ago. This carnivore may be considered a "short-faced" dog and was certainly an ancestor of dog-like carnivores. This skull alone measures some 7 inches (18 cm) in length and consists of two separate pieces, namely a maxilla and mandible. There is an abundance of original fossilized bone material on this skull with most of the restoration associated with the teeth. Unlike many vertebrate skulls, the lower jaw is rather complete, with only relatively typical bone restoration. Both the upper and lower teeth indicate a reconstruction process aside from one of the canines and several of the individuals on top. The overall skull evidences excellent condition in terms of the bone quality and completeness with requisite repair preparation as part of its recovery process. The fossil displays quite dramatically on its mounting, with an intimidating "expression" due to the open jaw of the canid that actually was not a true obligate carnivore but more likely had a significant percentage of its diet from non-meat sources. This dog was definitely a survivor.
    Overall Measurements: 8.00 x 6.25 x 4.50 inches (20.32 x 15.87 x 11.43 cm)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
