    Fossil Bison Skull
    Bison antiquus ("ancient bison")
    Bonner Springs, Kansas, USA

From the pastoral sounding locality of Bonner Springs, Kansas, this ancient Bison skull is impressive on many levels. This female example of Bison antiquus exhibits a rich chocolate brown coloration and the rustic "western" look only a skull can have. The skull is not, technically, complete since there is not a mandible, but the massive top piece of this "antique Bison" skull is not lacking with two complete rows of well-preserved teeth and a most natural artistic form. Looking more like the subject matter for some Georgia O'Keeffe painting, this massive skull is solid and attractive. Once the most prevalent herbivore on the North American continent, this "Ice Age" beast was the direct ancestor of the modern American Buffalo. The rough and porous horns are short with a slight upward curve, but the tip of one "core" has been artificially, yet expertly, restored. There are several stark areas of the exposed internal structure visible, but, overall, this is an exceptional fossil we have lovingly named "Buffy."
