    Description

Forest City - Crusted End Wedge with American Museum of Natural History Provenance
    L6
    Winnebago County
    Iowa, USA
    Fall: 1890

The Forest City Meteorite shower occurred at 5:10pm on May 2, 1890. The fireball was seen in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota, and its smoke trail hovered in the sky for 45 minutes. It was the Forest City event - and a number of court cases that followed as a result of this event - that established the legal precedent which continues today: if a meteorite falls on private land in the United States, the property owner is the meteorite owner, not the person who finds it. Both difficult to obtain and historic, this specimen of Forest City is more notable still as it was removed from the main mass at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. With a large swath of fusion crust, a fractured edge and one broad cut and polished face, it is an oustanding specimen.
    Overall Measurements: 2.09 x 1.15 x 0.44 inches (5.30 x 2.91 x 1.13 cm), weighs 17.77 grams

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
