    Ferberite & Quartz
    Potosí, Potosí Department, Bolivia

"A cluster of several sharp shiny somewhat tabular wolframite crystals to about two inches growing on matrix with small quartz crystals. ?"
    - Rock H. Currier

Quite a bit after Potosí got done providing the 'cash flow' that powered the Spanish Empire, and the ill-fated Armada, minerals other than Silver, were found to have intrinsic value: Ferberite being one of the later discoveries. Sharp and lustrous examples, especially on matrix, are quite desirable among sophisticated mineral collectors. Once seriously called "the Richest Hill on Earth", Potosí has since had to fight it out with Butte, Montana, for the rights to that name. Chances are, the Grafsberg, operated by Freeport McMoran, in Irian Jaya, has eclipsed both of them. Haven't heard of it? That's just the way Freeport would like to keep it. An extremely sizable Ferberite crystal dominates this specimen.
    Overall Measurements: 4.7 x 3.6 x 2.0 inches (12.0 x 9.2 x 5.0 cm).
    Offered at no reserve

    Provenance: RHC #5908, acquired 1990
