Exceptional Gemstone: Tsavorite Garnet - 65.72 Ct.
Block D, Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mts, Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania

Is there any connoisseur of fine gemstones who has not seen the verdant green variety of Grossular Garnet, named for nearby Tsavo National Park in Kenya? The first crystals were initially found in the 1960s and, in the years since, there has been, more or less, steady production for the 50 years following that discovery. As well known as Tsavorite is, less than 1% of cut stones exceed 3 carats in weight. Compared to worldwide Emerald production, Tsavorite is estimated to be around 200 times more rare, and that estimate is just for average sized material; at over 65 carats this enormous example is stratospheric in rarity. It is considered to be among the top five examples known for Tsavorite, based on its weight and other attributes. The rough was found in 2003 and was beautifully cut in Bangkok, Thailand, into an oval mixed-cut gemstone that emphasizes its brilliance and eye clean clarity. Accompanying the stone is a certificate (cert) from the American Gemological Laboratory (# CS 65945) that, among other things, certifies that it is a Tsavorite from East Africa and that it shows no signs of treatment or enhancement. There has never been a Tsavorite gemstone of this magnitude ever brought to auction. It has been residing quietly in the Rainbow of Africa Museum - the crown jewel of the collection.
    Measurements: 23.42 x 20.20 x 16.53 mm, 65.72 cts.
    Offered at no reserve.
