Description
EXCEPTIONAL CRINOID MORTALITY SLABJimbacrinus bostocki
Permian
Cundlego Formation, Gascoyne Junction, Australia
Crinoids are odd filter-feeding echinoderms that once thrived in the world's oceans; but do their nature of quick fragmentation after death, complete crinoid fossils are difficult to find. The present slab of Permian rock from Australia has several remarkably well preserved and ornate crinoids; each one prepared with the finest attention to detail. The crinoids have large detailed crowns; robust aboral cups armed with decorative and possibly defensive spikes, textured tentacle-like arms curled up like fern fiddleheads, and slender pinnules - some of which are freestanding - attached to the arms. There are 4 complete crowns, the largest measuring 5 ½ inches long, on the tan Australian sandstone slab measuring 12 ½ x 8 ½ x 4 inches.
