    Dioptase & Calcite
Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Oshikoto Region, Namibia

"A mound of typical white Tsumeb rhombohedral calcite crystals to about an inch covered in places with a carpet of small shiny green dioptase crystals. Bought the specimen from David Wilber when he had fallen on hard times and needed to raise some money."
    - Rock H. Currier

Thanks Rock, for that uplifting bit of economic news. Jesus, the boy could be savage. Anyway, Dave's loss was Rock's gain. The combination of nickel-green Dioptase on snow-white Calcite is one of the most recognizable 'stars' in the Tsumeb galaxy, and rightly so. No one, rank amateurs and philistines included, can resist the over-the-top color of Dioptase: a property that makes it very difficult to capture what the eye sees and reproduce it accurately in a photograph. Photographers and printers say that it is 'out of gamut', meaning outside the normal color system specs. This is a sizable cabinet specimen with excellent pedigree, considering much of Dave's fine mineral collection ultimately ended up in major museums.
