    Contoured Petrified Wood
    Araucarioxylon arizonicum
    Chinle Formation
    Arizona, USA

Petrified Wood is one of the most attractive of all fossil materials, especially when it has the capacity to be cut and polished into works of lapidary art. This 200 million year old fossil remnant from the Triassic will sometimes mineralize in such a way that elements will be absorbed through capillary attraction by the porous organic wood resulting in cell by cell replacement of the original matter as a petrified rock.

This majestic example of "rainbow" Petrified Wood from Arizona has been polished with a contoured surface resulting in a unique and thoughtful presentation. The colorful top features a thick banding of vibrant reds and oranges which encircle a core of blues and whites. Its undulating surface measures a full 15 inches (38.1 cm) across at its longest point, and the heavy piece is well over 3 inches (7.62 cm) thick at its deepest point. The massive piece has immense decorative appeal, and its three-dimensionality makes the specimen much more versatile and interesting as both a collectible and a decorative piece. The bonus feature of this large specimen is the well-preserved bark rind which surrounds the irregular log section with touches of black which extend up to the polished contour surface framing the fossil.
    Overall Measurements: 14.37 x 13.19 x 3.94 inches (36.50 x 33.50 x 10.00 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
